An Evaluation of the Use of Critical Swimming Speed for Determination of Culvert Water Velocity Criteria for

چکیده
,4bstruct.-Critical swimming speed (U,,,) is a common rneHsure of the relationship between exercise intensity and duration within the prolonged perforn~nnce nvelope. This relationship is often used to establish wntcr velocity criterin for fishways and culverts; however, the technique involves the nssumptions that fish will choose to move at ( I ) n swimming spced cquivulent to U,,, and (2) a ground speed that results in a passage time equnl to the intervnl used in the criticnl speed protocol. The objective of this study wns to cvaluute thc validity olthese assumptions nnd the usefulness of velocity critcrin based on critical speed dnta in predicting passage success. To nccomplish this, I measured the critical swimmin~ speed of wild smalln~outh bass Miuropter~i~ dolomieu in a respiromcter and Lhe relntionship helwecn the water velocity and swimming speed of tish in a 50-m rnccway. The lnttcr was then uscd in conjunction with the former to calculate wntcr velocity criteria hased on ground spccds ~ctually nttained by fish, thereby eliminating the second nssump~ion. Criticd swimming speeds rangcd from 65 to 98 c d s and were positively correlated to fish length (24-44 em). Swimming speeds atrained hy free-swimming fish in the raceway increased significnntly with wnter velocity. Maximurrl nllowable wnter velocities for rnceway fish (nd.jusred uppropriately for cxpccted swimming speed) rnngcd from 54 to 63 crnls, depending on fish length. Dcspite this. thc proportion of individuals that mnde cornpletc ascents ngainst water velocities ranging from 40 to 120 c d s wns high (82-95%), nnd the probnbility of a successful nscent did not chnnge signilicnntly with water velocity. fish length, water temperature, exposure rime, or time in cnptivity. As such, it is concluded that criticnl speed should not be used to set culvert water velocity criteria for this species.

Substrate roughening improves swimming performance in two small-bodied riverine fishes: implications for culvert remediation and design
Worldwide declines in riverine fish abundance and diversity have been linked to the fragmentation of aquatic habitats through the installation of instream structures (e.g. culverts, dams, weirs and barrages). Restoring riverine connectivity can be achieved by remediating structures impeding fish movements by, for example, replacing smooth substrates of pipe culverts with naturalistic substrates...

Objective: Over recent years, due to scientific advances in various aspects of sport, rapid development and improvement has taken place in sport performance standards as well as athletes' performance. In the swimming tournaments, on-time and correct start, plays an important role in the success of swimmers, especially speed swimmers. The aim of this study was comparising selected kinematic vari...
متن کاملCritical Swimming Speeds of Yellow Perch Perca Flavescens: Comparison of Populations from a Naturally Acidic Lake and a Circumneutral Lake in Acid and Neutral Water
The objectives of this study were to determine if environmental acidity reduces swimming performance in the acid-tolerant yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and to use swimming performance as an indicator of fitness in testing whether fish from naturally acidic environments perform better in acidic water. Perch from a naturally acidic lake (pH4-4) or a nearby circumneutral lake were swum after eit...
متن کاملSwimming performance in juvenile shortnose sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum): the influence of time interval and velocity increments on critical swimming tests
The most utilized method to measure swimming performance of fishes has been the critical swimming speed (UCrit) test. In this test, the fish is forced to swim against an incrementally increasing flow of water until fatigue. Before the water velocity is increased, the fish swims at the water velocity for a specific, pre-arranged time interval. The magnitude of the velocity increments and the tim...

Introduction: Chlorination has been used as a major disinfectant process for public drinking and swimming pool water in many countries. However, it was concern over the disinfection byproducts (DBPs) by the reaction of chlorine with organic material in water and the effect on human health. The purpose of this study was to determination trihalomethane concentrations in indoor swimming pools wate...
